At United, we use the sector specialist, multi-manager investment approach to investment management which has been used consistently for over 15 years. We apply this approach by combining a blend of high quality, active investment managers to manage investments within a mandated asset class.

We select only highly regarded investment managers who have specific skills and expertise at managing investments within a specified asset class and have a demonstrated ability to add value over the investment cycle. Within each asset class, we select a blend of investment managers with complimentary styles to achieve an overall portfolio that is free from style or capitalisation biases. This approach to portfolio construction has two key benefits:

• It removes the risks associated with making unintended factor or thematic selections relative to the benchmark, thus reducing the risk of underperformance relative to the benchmark.
• It focuses on stock selection as the key source of out-performance.

The diversified funds invest into the single sector funds. We adopt a passive approach to asset allocation. The asset allocation for each of our diversified funds is managed to establish guidelines and constraints based on the relevant average asset allocation of the respective Intech universe. Therefore, the focus is on investment manager and stock selection as the key source of out-performance.
